Contractor, a Mumbai-born Indian living in Nigeria from the time she was seven years old, had a lot of knowledge about world cultures and traveling even at a very young age. After attending boarding school for seven years in London, her family relocated to Toronto Canada in which she lived for much of her early years and into early adulthood. Contractor trained and eventually became a classical dancer in Toronto. She attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto, an arts school focused on theatre and dance. The 92 productions she performed earned praise from Canadian critics. She was offered the opportunity to be a part of the Stratford Conservatory. The school accepts only eight men as well as four female students to take a course in traditional theatre. Contractor was ecstatically accepted. The actress's spot in the next production was secured, and she was offered the part in the play as Hermia.
